The Hamptons, our 14-bed residential mental health service in Bamber Bridge, Preston, provides a psychologically informed and therapeutically designed environment where people can rebuild stability, confidence and independence after periods of difficulty.
Resident K’s journey reflects the difference that meaningful activity, structured support and a consistent staff team can make.
Resident K joined The Hamptons in December 2024 following a period in which everyday life had become increasingly challenging. On arrival, he felt anxious, unsure of himself and hesitant to take part in activities or spend time outside the unit.
With patience, encouragement and the support of a team who took the time to build trust, K began to settle into a routine. The safe and structured environment at The Hamptons gave him the stability he needed to start engaging again – at his own pace.

As his confidence grew, K began attending groups such as Healthy Cooking, Positive Futures and Recovery Through Activity. Cooking quickly became a highlight for him. He enjoyed trying new recipes and sharing his own skills – including teaching others his favourite methods for preparing vegetables. These moments helped him reconnect with a sense of pride and purpose.
K also built social confidence through everyday interactions – joining staff and peers for games of dominoes, Jenga and pool. These seemingly simple activities played an important role in helping him feel part of a community again.
One standout moment for K was volunteering with the Cuerden Park Northern Lights project, where he supported the creation of lanterns for a large public event. Seeing his work displayed to visitors gave him a real sense of achievement.
When K first arrived, he found using leave and accessing the community overwhelming. With graded support from the team, he gradually progressed from short supported walks to confidently travelling to Preston and Chorley using public transport.
He also applied for a bus pass – an important step towards greater independence — and continued building his daily living skills, including personal care, grooming and taking pride in his appearance.
Group trips, like a community skills visit to Chorley, helped K practice budgeting, shopping and planning ahead for his new living environment. This supported him in preparing for the next step on his journey.
Thanks to his hard work and the consistency of the support around him, Resident K is now preparing to move to a supported living placement in Accrington. This next step will give him more independence while still providing the structure he needs as he continues to progress.
K is particularly looking forward to being closer to his family, including his grandchildren – something that means a great deal to him.
