At Heathy House, we work with each person to build skills and confidence through activities that are meaningful to them. For one resident, a recent 1:1 Occupational Therapy session was a chance to paint a beach and sea scene for someone special.
He chose calming shades of blue for the ocean and spent time creating a peaceful coastal landscape. Painting gave him space to relax and express his creativity, while the 1:1 session gave him time to talk with his Occupational Therapist.
As the picture developed, he spoke about wanting to make something for someone else. That gave the activity a personal purpose. The finished painting was a thoughtful gift for someone important to him.
There was meaning in the process, too. He made choices about what to paint, enjoyed the conversation as he worked and could take pride in the finished piece. Our Occupational Therapy team works with residents to find activities that reflect their interests and what matters to them.
Heathy House is Active Pathways’ residential service in Halifax for men with complex mental health needs. We support people moving from specialist wards or acute hospitals towards supported or community living. Activities such as this can help residents express themselves, build confidence and maintain connections with the people who matter to them.
