At Millcroft, our residential care service in Leeds for men with complex mental health needs requiring a rehabilitation pathway, meaningful engagement plays an important role in everyday life.
A recent gardening project, led by our Occupational Therapy team, has brought individuals together to transform part of the garden into a thriving growing space. Working collaboratively, the group has planted vegetables including tomatoes, radishes and carrots, built a greenhouse and created sustainable growing solutions using recycled materials.
The project has provided opportunities to develop practical skills, establish routine, spend time outdoors and work towards a shared goal. Just as importantly, it has encouraged individuals to take ownership, contribute to their community and experience the satisfaction that comes from seeing the results of their efforts.
One of the standout features of the project has been the creativity, resourcefulness and ownership shown by one individual, who repurposed recycled plastic and wood to support sustainable growing. Having developed a real passion for the garden, they have proudly taken on responsibility for helping to maintain the space, playing an important role in ensuring it continues to flourish throughout the season.
While the vegetables will eventually be used in home-cooked meals, the wider benefits of the project reach far beyond what is harvested. Activities such as gardening can support wellbeing, confidence, social inclusion and skill development, helping people reconnect with their strengths and build a sense of purpose.
At Active Pathways, meaningful engagement forms part of our wider approach to supporting people on their individual pathway. Through a range of group and one-to-one activities, individuals are encouraged to explore interests, develop life skills and build the confidence needed to achieve their personal goals and greater independence.
As the garden continues to grow throughout the summer, so too will the opportunities it creates for learning, achievement and connection. We are looking forward to seeing the project flourish and, of course, enjoying some of the fresh produce it will provide.
